Revised - Broadcast Shwarzenegger Story

Govenator’s Bear
25 seconds

STARTING TODAY, VISITORS TO THE CAPITOL WILL FIND A BRONZE STATUE OF A GRIZZLY BEAR IN THE HALLWAY OUTSIDE GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER (SH-WAR-ZEN-A-GUR’S) OFFICE.

GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER (SH-WAR-ZEN-A-GUR) BOUGHT THE STATUE WITH HIS OWN MONEY FROM AN ART GALLERY IN ASPEN, COLORADO, WHERE HE HAD STOPPED ON A FUND-RAISING SWING.

HIS SPOKESMAN, AARON MCLEAR SAID THAT THE GOVERNOR THOUGHT THAT SCHOOL CHILDREN WHO TOUR THE CAPITOL WOULD ENJOY TAKING PICTURES WITH THE BEAR.

THE STATUE, BY ARTIST STEVEN BENNETT, IS THE SAME TYPE OF BEAR THAT DECORATES THE CALIFORNIA STATE FLAG.

Note: I was taught in my broadcasting class with Shrader, to spell out the pronunciation of awkwardly spelled names, even if they are well known.

  1. Good lead.

When you include a pronunciation guide (a good idea with a name like Schwarzenegger), put the name in your story as you would normally, then put the pronunciation guide in parentheses right after it.

    Ex.: GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER (SH-WAR-ZEN-A-GUR)

Stick to straightforward sentences -- they're easier to hear and understand:
GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER (SH-WAR-ZEN-A-GUR) BOUGHT THE STATUE WITH HIS OWN MONEY FROM AN ART GALLERY IN ASPEN, COLORADO, WHERE HE HAD STOPPED ON A FUND-RAISING SWING.

  2. I'll check with the broadcast guys about that. I just think you have to be careful that your pronunciation guide doesn't obscure the actual name.

  3. I see your teacher told you to put the pronunciation guide, so you assumed to put it after every time you used the same word that needed pronouncing (i.e. SCHWARZENEGGER). But you took her too literally, understandably.

Once you pronounce it the first time, don't pronounce it any time after that (which you did in the next paragraph). A pronunciation guide is like a person's full name; you say it once at the beginning and then abbreviate after that (last name only or just the name SCHWARZENEGGER, no guide needed). Otherwise, you assume your audience is too incompetent to look back up on how to pronounce it, which in turn makes you look like an idiot for repeating yourself and not trusting the intelligence of the average reader.

  4. lol fool. it's not for an audience. It's the reporter's script on the teleprompter and they might need the pronunciation key more than once.
=D but thanks for the edit fail haha jk
